The Supremacy of Jesus

==========
The Supremacy of Jesus
We will be exploring a passage in Colossians 1 and how Paul revealed the supremacy of Christ.

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1‬:‭15‬-‭20‬‬
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

“The Son is the image of the invisible God…”

Jesus is the true image of God because he is God.

“… the firstborn over all creation”

A father’s firstborn son was seen as equal to their father. They would receive all his power and wealth. Paul was reminding his readers that Jesus is equal to the Father in every way.

“For in him, all things were created...”

When we make a commitment to be a follower of Jesus, there is nothing more or deeper than the person of Jesus Christ.

“…all things have been created through him and for him.”

We were created with the purpose and intention of belonging to Jesus. We will only find purpose and satisfaction when we give ourselves to belong to Jesus.

“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

It is only by the will of Jesus that we exist because he holds all things together.

“And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.”

Jesus has gone first before us and done everything first for us so that he might have the first place in our lives.

“For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him…”

It’s not just that Jesus is fully God, but God is also fully Jesus.

“…and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.”

The unfathomable truth is that it was God’s great pleasure to come to us as the person of Jesus so that he could reconcile us to himself by dying on the cross in our place.

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
late in time behold him come,
offspring of the Virgin's womb:
veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
hail th'incarnate Deity,
pleased with us in flesh to dwell,
Jesus, our Immanuel.

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1‬:‭21‬-‭23‬‬
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
